Design Features and Variations

Franklite wall uplighters and downlights are light fixtures that have been specially crafted to meet the demands and challenges of modern-day interior design. This section is dedicated to profiling these special features and highlighting the aesthetics and designs that have been built into these lights. Franklite offers these light fixtures in numerous shapes and designs to suit different settings: from classical to modern styles and even those influenced by the craft movement. Wall lampshades are made from various materials: glass, metal, or a combination of the two. They are made from mosaic glass, heavily ridged glass, fluted glass, or are simple with a matte opal finish. They can come in an antique brass finish, matte gold, chrome, brass, stainless steel, and more. Built into them are a variety of LED lamps and bulbs that use high lumen chips to offer a high lumen output. Beams of light can be created by our lighting designers so they can be used for decorative purposes, reading lights, or moderate centralized lighting. The primary selling point of these designs is the user experience and the various moods that can be created by a range of beautiful washes of light. Beam angles can vary between 91 and 180 degrees, and lumen outputs can range from 800 lm to 3360 lm per fitting. These light fixtures come with the bonus of being both adjustable and dimmable; each of them has a built-in switch. The dimming system may be stage one, wherein the maximal light output is reduced to 40%, and stage two, which offers greater variability. Uplighters and downlighters are built with three different warm color options: 2700K, 3000K, and 4000K, and can come with or without their LED driver—a purchase choice made so that the fixture can connect to a house’s existing dimming control. Finally, the lights in this category of downlighters and uplighters are covered by a three-year guarantee. Customization possibilities for these light fixtures include custom-made shade colors and/or finishes to suit interior colors and palettes, plus personal preference. The designs available are custom manufactured according to the order.

Installation and Maintenance Guidelines

Installation position: To enhance the natural beauty of the space, uplighters should be aligned above the item they light up, towards an area on the wall between the item and the ceiling. The downlights should align near the item, slightly ahead, as this adds definition. The end favors a bit of light onto the worktops from the top; behind are the fixings to conceal.

Electrical requirements: As these are low voltage fixtures, it is highly advisable that they are run from their own contractor system, without any other fixtures. Tests have shown that more than a 10% voltage difference between the pairs can cause a voltage drop, thus a drop in candle illumination level and potential malfunctions. The actual power consumption of a lighting installation is relatively unimportant, although a separate power supply of 60VA for each up/downlight is ideal depending on fixture size.

Installation: Mark on the wall where you would like to fasten the backplate, ensuring that the electric power supply cable is routed through the central chaffer in the backplate. Ensure that the screws are sufficient to take the weight, and we cannot be held responsible for fixtures that are not installed to a suitable and safe standard.

Compatibility: The fixtures are designed and should not be used with any other manufacturer’s lamps or dimmer accessories.

Maintenance: Always have your units installed maintaining one of the low voltage safety features - maintaining a safe separation from any combustible materials. This will enable you to extend the lamp life to 2000 hours, minimum. Continue by carrying out monthly cleaning/re-positioning checks. If the glass should become damaged, consult your dealer immediately. Our opinion of glass in downlighting is that they should be sealed in an air pocket recessed on the face. The optics would add value; the back of the glass should have a frosting to prevent overzealous electro-mechanical dishwashers from creating water trails. Permanently waterproof and IP rated downlights should also follow this procedure.

User checks: Ensure that the screw fixing on the unit or plate above is secure. If the items are mounted on a ceiling structure, fixes should be secure so the glass cover/shade does not make contact with the wall or ceiling surface, i.e., no load is hanging on the glass. In the event of continual spreading tarnish, ensure that the fitting is cleaned at regular intervals. This will prevent tarnish buildup. Remove the glass cover/shade. Then you should clean the clear lamp area of tarnishing with a suitable glass cleaner. Leave to dry and replace the glass shade/cover.

Troubleshooting: Remove the glass shade/cover from the fitting. Carefully check that the lamp is clean. Wipe with a dry clean cloth. Check that there is no discoloration of the lampholder. If there is, consult your dealer. If the lampholder has a direct connection to the transformer, check that it has not been sending any excess heat to the gasket. Fully reduce tension by completely unscrewing tensioning or machine screws, remove the glass shade/cover. Turn the shade to align the holes on a stable surface and rinse with slightly warm soapy water. Allow to dry. Smear the edge of the shade or cover and uplighting mounting plate with food grade silicone. Re-screw the screws and gradually lower tension.

Applications and Benefits in Interior Lighting Design

Uplighters and downlights offer two different types of lighting, many of which combine the qualities of both into one highly practical fixture. This is exhibited in wall uplighters and downlights, which are also very design-oriented in a way that meets the general principles of contemporary interior design. Today, wall uplighters and downlights are, in fact, popular elements in lighting design, interior surfaces part of which they become, with light that creates various and different effects when being reflected off the surfaces. Few people today go for many concealed lighting fixtures all over the office or home in corridors, workspaces, or living areas. If you like minimalistic interior design, wall uplighters and downlights will help you make your rooms look, feel, and be better.

The applications and benefits of wall uplighters and downlights are many, and they come in many shapes and sizes, from the formal to the highly formal in the case of hotel and residential lounges, bedrooms, and walkways. In transit areas such as hospitals and retirement homes, they serve a dual purpose. In private offices and homes, they can highlight certain features of the room or lighting system, in addition to acting as a source of illumination. If you are to light a large space with one or two overhead pendant lights, you will end up with a lot of wasted space, one that is light-deprived. Light-deprived spaces, in turn, restrict the usability of the space. Uplighters can light this light-deprived space, improving the usability of the whole area and also saving on the running cost; depending on the size and number of uplighters used, you may not even need primary overhead illumination that needs to be powered and is therefore very expensive.

The output of wall uplighters might stand at 800-1300 lm, which is enough to light quite a bit of common usage, prudential, or bypassed space. Since the effects of downward and upward light are different, many wall uplighters and downlights on the market are combinations of the two. For efficiency’s sake, if you will be ordering such a large number of wall uplighters or downlights, it is important to reach an understanding with the manufacturer as to whether the purchase would be considered wholesale or special, and what the level of diminishing returns on previous sale seasons would be, as no buyers would like to be taken advantage of. If you like wall uplighters or downlights, there are many more interesting fixtures available in addition to these.
